Launching “Pet Care by Gemma”

By Gemma Giles

I couldn’t be happier to be launching my new website and the start of my next venture! It’s been a bit of an unusual road here but I’m so glad to be doing something that fills me with such excitement.

A Change of Career

After working as a community pharmacist for the past twenty years I took the difficult decision to step away from the world of medicines and into the world of pet care.

Community pharmacy is having a difficult time at the moment, as are many areas of our wonderful health service. The pharmacy staff who serve you day in, day out deserve to be praised for all the efforts they make to provide services that are becoming more stretched. They really do go above and beyond to help patients in an environment that is becoming more strained and difficult.

It is with great sadness that I decided that my time in the pharmacy had come to an end. Trying to balance life and work had become too much of a struggle and ultimately time with my children and husband would always win.

After taking a little time off and enjoying the lucky position of being able to spend a lot more time at home, my thoughts turned inevitably to my future. I was determined that moving forward I would do so towards a career that I truly loved.

After working within pharmacy since the age of 14 and really knowing little else this proved a little daunting. I’d always loved the patient interaction side of my job role, and loved nothing more than helping people. If I couldn’t be found within the dispensary, the staff would always know to glance into the consulting room, where I’d often be found chatting to one of our lovely patients.

If I could make a career out of chatting to people then this would be perfect! So the first step was to find a job that would help people and also involve some chatting, simple!

My Love of Animals

Another of my great loves has always been animals. I opted to study pharmacy at university after feeling that veterinary science might lead to a career that would prove a little too emotional for me. Work experience at my local veterinary surgeries, and seeing the work vets do was so inspiring and I looked on in amazement as they compassionately dealt with poorly animals but I’d worried that I would’ve been in pieces. So a career in pharmacy it was for me!

Animals, especially pets have an ability to provide us with companionship and an uncomplicated love that is often unmatched. We hold our pets so dearly in our hearts and they often become one of, if not the most loved member of our family. So the second step towards a new career would ultimately involve animals! And even though they may not be able to chatter back to me, I’m more than happy chatting away to them, as I’m sure we all do!

Creating ‘Pet Care by Gemma’

Combining these two loves seemed to lead me nicely to my new business venture, and Pet Care by Gemma was born. I hope that by creating my pet services business I can help you continue the care of your beloved pets when you can’t be there. It really would be my privilege.

So a big thank you to all the fellow animal lovers I’ve met since forming my business and their wonderful pets! And I’m looking forward to making more animal (and human!) friends as my business grows.

Creating My Website!

Just one last little mention, to the amazing 203 Digital for creating my beautiful website. I am not remotely ‘techy’ and shy away from all things social media related but they have patiently guided me through the process and even helped me post my first ever blog here today! They are a small web design company, creating websites for small businesses and I really cannot thank them enough!
